‘CONTINUE WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF AFRICA…’

ACoC - CJAX Work Group Meeting, Pretoria, June 2009
‘Peacekeeping requires special tools to ensure success in the field’. These were just some of the issues of discussion during the ACoC-CJAX Work Group Meeting that was held at the Tram Village Guest House from the 11-12 of June in Pretoria, South Africa. Some of these tools as mentioned by General Lancaster Bottoman of the SADC-PLANELM comprise training, doctrinal matters, and standard operational procedures - that’s is, relevant crosscutting issues such as quality assurance and standardization of processes. The need to network and improve the quality and quantity of courses in Staff colleges in order to create depth was also discussed.
Participants of the CJAX Work Group Meeting were also urged to continue working together for the good of Africa. The encouragement came from the out-going Chair of the 2nd ACoC Maj. Gen. R. E Baiden of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Ghana, who was accompanied in the meeting by the incoming chair, Maj. Gen. Kwesi Yankson (Commandant of the GAFCSC) and Grp. Cpt. Augustus Lawson, also of the GAFCSC. The meeting, which was opened by Gen S. Mashobane of the South Africa National War College (SANWC), was also attended by representatives from the BPSTSA, various Defense Staff Colleges from Africa and delegates from RECs including SADC, East Africa and the North Africa Planning Elements.
The meeting comprised of two Working Groups and agreed on the aim of the CJAX, noting that it would be to practice the operational level planning, co-ordination and conduct of PSOs in order to enhance the effectiveness of students in future operations with the objective of studying the multi-faceted nature of PSOs and to demonstrate the utility of military planning tools. The Working Groups also agreed that the CJAX would expose students to working together and to establish a common basis for PSO objectives, achieve commonality of aim and doctrine and gain the benefit of mutual understanding.
