The Security Sector Governance Programme of the Institute for Security Studies is organising a Conference under the theme: “HIV/AIDS and The African Military: Towards A Common and Comprehensive Approach” from 11-13 March 2009 in Jinja, Uganda. The Conference is under the auspices of the African Union and shall be hosted by the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF).

The overall objective of the African conference is to evolve a common and comprehensive African approach in addressing the HIV/ Aids pandemic in the uniformed services. This objective will be pursued within the context of collaborative security and the development of the regional brigades as part of the Africa peace and security architecture. Given the priority role armed forces in Africa are giving to participation in multilateral Peace Supporting Operations, this conference will focus on HIV/Aids and peace-keeping, looking at international, regional and national HIV policies and practices relating to managing the impact of HIV/Aids on Peace-keeping Operations.

The event will be attended by some officials from AU, RECs, Regional Standby Brigades, some AU Member countries and civil society organisations.
